The Norman Samuels Trio

The Norman Samuels trio comes together for the first time in May 2023. Right from the first rehearsal, the trio immediately notices a natural dynamic and a high level of interaction. Unanimously, it is decided that the trio will interpret Norman's pieces in the future. Within this trio, he plays a unique bass guitar with a sound reminiscent of a double bass. The combination of this distinct sound with his playing style results in a contemporary, expressive, and melodic musical experience. His compositions draw inspiration from the experimental harmonies of 1960s jazz and artists like Bill Frisell, Pat Matheny and Brad Mehldau. Pianist Fee Aaij and drummer Peter Jan van Kaam effortlessly interpret the compositions thanks to their fitting playing styles. Additionally, they listen closely to each other's ideas, enhancing the overall musical experience beyond the sum of its parts. The trio studies at the conservatories of Arnhem and Utrecht and took masterclasses by Dutch Jazz giants Wiro Mahieu, Jeroen van Vliet and Philipp Rüttgers to further explore their sounds and possibilities.
